Total Construction Spending: 2012-2020, 11-State Total

The biopharmaceutical industry invested $22.4 billion in privately-funded infrastructure across the 11-state sample between 2012 and 2017. Industry construction spending has been on the upswing in the last two years. This trend does not appear temporary, projections of total spending climb to $4.6 billion in 2018 and remain above $4.3 billion through 2020.

Union Labor Hours by Trade (2012 – 2017)

The biopharmaceutical industry required 45.4 million labor hours from construction workers on facilities across 14 trades from 2012 - 2017 -- this equated to 4,447 full-time construction jobs in 2017 across the 11 states studied.

Union Labor Hours: State Overview (2012 – 2017)

Union hours are estimated by multiplying the total number of labor hours demanded by each state’s union density in non-residential construction. The results show that the biopharmaceutical industry required a minimum of 15.6 million union labor hours to build and renovate facilities between 2012 and 2017.

Union Earnings: State Overview (2012 – 2017)

The biopharmaceutical industry required at least 15.6 million labor hours by union workers in the 11 states studied from 2012 – 2017. This yields a minimum of $454 million in worker earnings in addition to tens of millions of dollars in funding for union health insurance and pension benefits. The conservative nature of these estimates is due to statistical limitations - the full impact of the industry on union construction hours and earnings is likely to be substantially higher than projections.

Projects Overview: 2012-2017, 11-State Total

There were 249 major private-sector biopharmaceutical construction projects ($5M+) under construction at any point between 2012 -2017. The report estimates these projects equated to $14.3 billion in industry investment in those 11 states.
